The Clinical Education Program (with effective from Sep, 2016)
The clinical education program for the five years of study is described below:

  • Year I: Observation of a session in the Student Clinic
  • Year II: Observation of a session in the Student Clinic and 15 hours of hearing screening
  • Year III: Clinical visits, placement at internal clinics and external clinics with the child population (whole year)
  • Year IV: placement at internal clinics and external clinics with the adult population (whole year)
  • Year V: placement at external clinics with both the child and the adult population (whole year)

Year I and Year II
During the year, students will observe sessions with an individual (child or adult) with speech, language, communication or swallowing disorder. Students may also be invited to volunteer in experiential learning activities with service providers in the community.

Year III
During this year, students will engage in two blocks of clinic placement. In the first semester, the block covers 7 weeks and in the second semester, the block covers 10 weeks. Both blocks together students will obtain about 108 client contact hours.

The first block of placement introduces students to clinical practice with children with speech sound disorders and language disorders across the pre-primary to the secondary school years. Students will learn to provide assessment, interpret and analyze data, and plan intervention under close supervision. Students will develop novice-level professional and clinical competence in the management of paediatric cases as specified by CBOS.

The second block of placement broadens students’ experience with a range of paediatric communication disorders, working under supervision in the internal clinic and in community settings in Hong Kong. Students will extend their professional and clinical competence to intermediate-level in the management of paediatric cases as specified by CBOS.

Year IV
During this year, students will engage in two blocks of clinic placement. In the first semester, the block covers 9 weeks and in the second semester, the block covers 10 weeks. Both blocks together students will obtain about 116 client contact hours. These contact hours will be obtained through supervised speech therapy services provided in residential homes / day-care centers for the elderly, hospitals and rehabilitation community centers under the Community Rehabilitation Network. In July/August, some students may receive additional placement in a local or overseas site.

The first block of placement introduces students to clinical practice with adults with communication disorders. Students will learn to provide assessment, interpret and analyze data, and plan intervention under close supervision. Students will develop novice-level professional and clinical competence in the management of adult cases as specified by CBOS.

The second block of placement broadens students’ experience with adults with communication and swallowing disorders and facilitates increasing independence in clinical practice with an appropriate level of supervision. Students will demonstrate intermediate-level professional and clinical competence in the management of adult cases as specified by CBOS.

Year V
During this year, students will engage in two blocks of placement, with each covering 10 weeks. In each block, students will be placed in 1 or 2 different settings for two full days per week. Of the four placements for the year, one is with the adult population and three are with the child population.

This year’s clinical placement is a capstone experience for students. Students will develop ethical, professional and clinical competence in a range of paediatric and adult communication and swallowing disorders, as well as entry-level skills in prevention, counseling and consultation in interdisciplinary and multicultural contexts. By the end of the year, students will have achieved entry-level competence as speech language therapists.

In the following links, students will find a list of clinical resources and other information needed for their clinical placement.
