Clinical Education

Our Goal

In the 2016-2017 academic year, the Bachelor of Science program in Speech and Hearing Sciences underwent a major curriculum reform. The new curriculum is grounded within the frameworks of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). The framework ICF requires a professional speech therapist to consider the whole person, including culture and quality of life, in the diagnosis and management of communication and swallowing disorders. The framework of EBP requires the clinician to adopt a tripartite approach to clinical decision-making that includes clinical experience, research findings, and client needs and perspectives, which recognizes cultural differences and quality of life goals.

The goal of our clinical education program is to provide students with training required for meeting professional standards of duty of care to clients with speech, language, communication, or swallowing disorders. To achieve this goal, our students will

  a. learn how to apply ICF and EBP principles and practices during their education and clinical training,
  b. learn how to translate knowledge and skills to practice in diverse contexts,
  c. observe the Code of Ethics endorsed by the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists.
