Hearing screening for neonates and infants. New technology (otoacoustic emission recording) now enables audiologists to gain an indication of a young child's hearing status non-invasively and often very quickly. Dr McPherson is engaged in several projects to evaluate the utility of such equipment in (a) maternity hospital and (b) community child health centre environments.
Hearing loss in children in developing countries. Two-thirds of all children live in developing countries, where access to audiological assessment and rehabilitation is very limited. Dr McPherson has been involved in work in West Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific that has examined assessment and rehabilitation issues. Current projects include work on innovative hearing aid technology that will help hearing impaired children in developing countries.
General clinical audiological research. Ongoing projects include the effectiveness of acentral auditory processing assessment package, the use of otoacoustic emissions in detecting noise-induced hearing loss and work on low cost hearing aids for Asian countries.
